      SUCROSE INTAKE AND CARIOUS EXPERIENCE (Abstract): There is a dynamic relationship between sugar consumption and oral health. Patients who consume large amounts of sugar, even when are measured in quantity or frequency, typically have a larger number of cariogenic bacteria in comparison with those who have a reduced consumption. In this paper we proposed to study the actual correlation between the frequency of consumption of sugars, especially sucrose and dental caries incidence in patients with addressability to the dentist. Our study included dentition assessment from 135 patients in the dental office. By case history of patients, we have obtained information on the frequency of consumption of foods containing sugars and frequency of consumption of sweetened beverages. Carious experience was assessed by calculating the DMFT index. A significant association was observed between carious experience and amount of carbohydrates consumed daily by the patients. Frequency of consumption of foods high in sucrose presented a positive correlation with the DMFT index. Restriction of sugar consumption, food and beverages containing sucrose, is a current recommendation in the prevention of dental caries. Dentists need to be active in helping and encouraging these patients to change their diet.
