MORPHOMETRIC ANALYSIS OF THE MENTAL FORAMEN IN ADULT NIGERIAN MANDIBLES (Abstract): Background: The detailed knowledge of the morphometry of the mental foramen in different populations is vital in clinical dentistry . The aim of this study was to determine the morphological features of the mental foramen in an adult Nigeria population. Materials and Methods: A total number of one hundred adult dry mandibles 89 males, 11 females from Anatomy departments of some Nigerian Universities were used for this study. Automatic vernier caliper was used to measure vertical and transverse diameters of the mental foramen.. Data analysis was analyzed with Graph Pad Prism 3.0. A comparison was made of the means of the dimensions using Student‘s T-test and analysis of variance. Results: The findings indicated that the most co mmon position for the mental foramen was in line with the longitudinal axis of the lower second premolar (69%) followed by a position between first and second premolar (25%),(6% on 1st molar. Our results showed horizontal diameter of 3.26 ± 0.01, and 2.87 ± 0.35 mm (left) and 3.23 ± 0.01, 2.26 ± 0,19 mm ( right ) for male and female respectively. The vertical diameter of 2.73 ± 0.09, 2.56 ± 0.27 mm (left) and 2.77 ± 0.09, 2.14 ± 0.18 mm ( right) for male and female respectively. Conclusion: This study will assist surgeons in maxillofacial procedures thus avoiding complications during surgery.
