SURGICAL ANATOMY OF THE URETER: ITS IMPORTANCE TO ABDOMINOPELVIC SURGERY (Abstract): The abdominopelvic surgery with its multiple types of interventions is based on the knowledge of the surgical anatomy of the ureter (pathway, relationships, structure). During surgical dissection, the surgeon must be familiar with the anatomy of the ureter in order to avoid injuries that will require reconstruction. Our paper presents the critical areas where the ureter can be damaged and its anatomical relations useful in various types of ureteral reconstruction after iatrogenic injury or after surgical excision of abdominopelvic tumors invading the ureter. In this regard, we used intraoperative images from a group of patients presenting neoplasm of uterine cervix with urinary bladder and / rectal invasion. During oncologic surgery, the anatomical landmarks are important to the surgeon in order to preserve as much as possible of the ureter and to release the ureter from postradiation fibrotic tissue. Knowledge of the anatomy of the ureter ensures the success and safety of the major abdominopelvic surgery.
