THE FUNCTIONAL ANATOMY OF THE MITRAL VALVE- AN ECHOGRAPHIC AND SURGICAL APPROACH (Abstract): This paper aims an overview of the mitral valve functional anatomy, of preoperative echo evaluation of mitral valve and underlines the importance of mitral valve anatomy understanding for the clinician. The valvular dysfunction, as a consequence of the valvular lesions, is classified in three morpho-functional classes. The type II dysfunction is the most complex and most difficult to be treated by conservatory surgery of the mitral valve. Transesophageal echocardiography has an essential role in the evaluation and decision of mitral valve repair surgery. The mitral valve anatomy knowledge is very important for transesophageal ecography utilisation. There is a specific section for visualision of every segment of mitral valve that is analised. The echo-anatomical correlation is the key to success for mitral valve repair surgery. Therefore it is absolute necessary a systemic echocardiographic approach that has to establish the correct and complet diagnosis of mitral valve lesion.
