SEX DETERMINATION BASED ON THE SACRAL DIMENSIONS MEASURED ON THE CT IMAGES (Abstract): Introduction. Because it is a component of the axial skeleton and because of the impact that the type of activity and functionality of pelvic organs have on its appearance and size, the sacral bone is a skeletal element with definite practical importance in determining the sex of the bone and thus the unidentified individual whom it belonged. For this purpose we performed a morphometric study to highlight differences in dimensions of the sacrum in men versus women in the current population of Romania. Material and methods. The study included a sample of 100 subjects, 50 female and 50 male, aged between 26 and 69 years. Each of them had a CT exam and on the images obtained, the following parameters were measured: the maximum length of the sacrum; the maximum width of the sacrum, the transverse diameter of S1 vertebral body and the transverse diameter of the sacral wing. Results. Of the four parameters analyzed, we could observe that the strongest correlation exists between the diameter of the sacral wing and the sex of the individual to whom it belonged. Conclusions. For the determination of sex of sacrum, maximum number of parameters that can be measured should be taken into account in order to obtain 100% accuracy. This study can be useful for the anatomists, anthropologists and experts in forensic medicine for accurate sexing of sacral bones as a first step on the road to identification of unknown human remains.
