HISTOLOGICAL MODIFICATIONS IN THE PLACENTA IN PREGNANCY INDUCED HYPERTENSION AND PREMATURITY (Abstract): Purpose: Presenting the most important structural modifications of the placenta on the maternal face, in pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH) and prematurity. Material and Method: We have studied the main microscopical modifications of 84 placentas obtained after delivery for two unequal groups: the study lot L1=63, representing mothers with PIH and prematurity and another control lot L2 = 21 normotensive mothers at term. The samples obtained by sections were specificaly prepared for the study with morphological HE staining, a histochemical stain Masson’s Trichrome technique and immunohistochemical staining using monoclonal anti-Human Cytokeratin and monoclonal anti-Human Ky 67. For the histological examination we used optical microscopy for observing mainly the lumen of arteriole and stomal changes. Results: We registered the following structural modifications in the pregnancies with PIH versus normal ones: changes in endothelium fibrinoid necrosis, the hypertrophy of tunica media, bridging syncytial knots, avascular small terminal villi with hyaline fibrosis of the stroma and the thrombosis of the terminal arterioles. Conclusions: A better understanding of the immunohistological damages demonstrated through our study, concerning the preeclamtic maternal face of the placenta, will change in the future.
