VARIABILITY OF LEFT AND RIGHT AURICLE IN CORRELATION WITH THE NOTION OF ATRIAL ISOMERISM (Abstract): Atrial Isomerism represents the situation where one of the atria is developing under the existing model of one side (right atrial isomerism both auricles are pyramid structure having the structure of right auricle; left atrial isomerism both auricles have hook shaped structure characteristic of left auricle). Right or left heart isomerism is usually associated with complex cardiac malformations. Even if the left right axis of the body is determined from the initial stages of gastrulation, cardiac looping is the first concrete anatomical sign of left right asymmetry. For vertebrate the heart is always curved towards right direction, this is controlled at the molecular level. Some authors suggest that in fact the primitive heart tube is never perfectly left right symmetrical and one of the mechanisms involved in left right asymmetry is heart tube uneven increasing that initiates heart bent. This article aims to update knowledge related to the right left heart asymmetry with both an academic nature and direct clinical implications as exemplified in images by micro dissection of a 16 week fetus with left atrial isomerism.
