      IMAGING EVIDENCE (MRI) ABOUT THE CERVICOFACIAL MUSCULOAPONEUROTIC SYSTEM (Abstract). The aim of the study was to analyze the existence and the appearance of the superficial muscolo-aponeurotic system (SMAS) in Magnetic Resonance Images (MRI) in different regions of the face. In MRI images, the SMAS appears as a relatively hyperdense tortuous line between the two hypodense fibroadipose lamina, superficial and deep adipose tissues. In the parotid region the superficial fibroadipose tissue is well represented, whereas the infraSMAS adipose tissue is very thin, SMAS being in intimate relation with gland. In cheek region SMAS is well recognizable, and the supraSMAS tissue is well represented. In upper lip the infraSMAS adipose tissue has a mean thickness, whereas the superficial fibroadipose layer is very thin. Medial to the nasolabial fold the SMAS continues in the facial expression muscles. Our results show that SMAS is a continuous layer and its regional arrangement suggests a centrifuge thinning to lateral regions of the face.
