THYROID FINE NEEDLE BIOPSY. GENERAL DATA, PERFORMANCE AND LIMITATIONS (Abstract): Introduction: Nodular thyroid pathology is a common and important problem. Thyroid fine needle biopsy (FNB) is a technique used as the first step in the assessment of thyroid nodules and plays an important role in the decision making process for the best therapeutic strategy. Aim: to evaluate the performance of thyroid fine needle biopsy in thyroid nodules. Material and method: The study group was represented by 309 patients (22 men and 287 women) diagnosed with nodular goiter at the Endocrinology Clinic of the Iaşi “St. Spiridon” Hospital between 2005 and 2008, in which thyroid fine needle biopsy was performed. In this study patients’ thyroid puncture was completed with paraffin histology of the surgical specimen obtained during thyroid gland removal. Cell samples obtained by fine needle biopsy (FNB) and the processing of the surgical specimens were diagnosed in the Pathology Department of the “St. Spiridon” Emergency Clinical Hospital, Iaşi. Results: This study showed that the sensitivity and specificity of FNB were at the upper limit accepted in the literature (74.2% and 93.5%, respectively), thus allowing the inclusion of FNB among the standard screening methods in nodular thyroid lesions. Conclusion: The sensitivity and specificity of this method as revealed by this study highlights its usefulness, allowing the avoidance of unnecessary surgery.
