MORPHOMETRIC STUDY OF THE LOBES OF THE THYROID GLAND IN BANGLADESHI CADAVER (Abstract): A cross sectional, descriptive study was done to find out the difference in between the lobes of the thyroid gland of Bangladeshi people in relation to age and sex, in the Department of Anatomy, Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka, Bangladesh, from January to December 2008, based on collection of 60 post mortem human thyroid gland from unclaimed dead bodies, from the morgue of Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka. The samples were divided into three age groups including A (10 20 years), B (21 50 years) & C (>50 years). The length, breadth and thickness of the lobes of the thyroid glands were measured by using a slide calipers and recorded. The length of the right and left lobes were 3.92±0.45 cm and 3.72±0.42 cm in group A, 5.00±0.82 cm and 4.28±0.66 cm in group B, 4.36±0.38 cm and 3.70±0.49 cm in group C. The breadth of the right and left lobes found were 2.45±0.25 cm and 2.17±0.21 cm; 2.18±0.37 cm and 1.99±0.46 cm; 2.17±0.31 cm and 1.78±0.33 cm in group A, B and C respectively. The thickness of the right and left lobes found were 1.92±0.27 cm and 1.72±0.27 cm; 1.31±0.56 cm and 1.26±0.62 cm; 1.05±0.34 cm and 0.87±0.27 cm in group A, B and C respectively. The length and breadth of the right lobe were significantly greater than left one; however, no statistical difference was found in thickness. Age related difference was found in some cases. No statistically significant difference was found between males and females.
