      DUCTUS VENOSUS EMBRYOLOGY AND FUNCTION – REVIEW OF LITERATURE (Abstract): Ductus venosus represents an anatomic shunt between the umbilical portion of the left branch of the portal vein and the inferior vena cava, through the hepatic veins. This vessel plays a very important role in the fetal circulation because it shunts the oxygenated and nutrient filled umbilical venous blood to the brain and myocardium instead of the fetal liver. In fetal sheep, during normal conditions, the flow through the liver is about two thirds of the umbilical veins flow, and one third is through ductus venosus. There are several conditions that can modify these rates. Among them, hypoxia, which significantly increase the flow through ductus venosus, probably in order to supply with oxygenated blood the vital organs such as brain or heart. The precise mechanism that controls the distribution of blood flows through the liver is not yet established. Many authors suggested the hypothesis of an autonomic regulation of the blood flow but couldn’t describe the precise mechanism. The existance of a sphincter in the isthmic portion of ductus venosus was incriminated as a part of this mechanism, but its presence is still controversial.
