THE TUBERCLE OF ZUCKERKANDL – SIGNIFICANCE IN THYROID SURGERY (Abstract): The tubercle of Zuckerkandl is distinct anatomical structure projecting from the posterolateral margin of the thyroid lobes. Described over one hundred years ago, it was underappreciated until recently, by both surgeons and anatomists. With the shift from subtotal thyroidectomy to total thyroidectomy for benign disease, the tubercle of Zuckerkandl came into focus. Due to its constant anatomic relation to the recurrent laryngeal nerve and also parathyroid glands, its discovery is very important for avoiding injury and preservation of these structures. The aim of this article is to review the relevant literature on Zuckerkand’s tubercle, from historical perspectives and development to surgical anatomy considerations.
