RADIOLOGICAL AND IMAGING FEATURES OF RENAL SMALL CELL CARCINOMA: A CASE REPORT AND LITERATURE REVIEW (Abstract): Renal small cell carcinoma is a tumoral entity encountered across all organs, except for the nervous system and liver. It is rarely depicted in an extrapulmonary location in up to 2.5% of cases. The present study presents for the first time a case of renal small cell carcinoma evaluated comparatively by contrast enhanced ultrasound and contrast enhanced tomography. The 45-year old patient was firstly examined by B-mode ultrasound and a 9.9 cm, inhomogeneous, right renal mass was observed. The tumor was in contact with the inferior vena cava on wich it exhibited mass effect. Contrast enhanced ultrasound showed early centripetal enhancement, and scattered unenhancing areas. In the late phase the tumor presented with slow wash-out. The contrast enhanced computed tomography scan identified the solid nature of the tumor, it’s sinus extension and inhomogeneous aspect – both on the unenhanced and enhanced scans. On the postcontrast studies the tumor exhibited a low enhancing behavior. Pathological analysis of the nephrectomy specimen revealed the tumor histology and stage – T2bN0Mx. The overall aim of our study was to analyse the present case with respect to the previously published radiological and imaging data. An extensive literature review was performed and only 11 cases of small cell renal carcinoma were found to associate a full radiological or imaging characterisation. The most frequent used tehcniques were contrast enhanced computed tomography, ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging. The main features of the tumoral entity were: heterogenicity; local invasiveness; and intravenous extension.
