MORPHOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF THE GINGIVAL TISSUE IN PERIODONTAL DISEASE (Abstract): The gingiva represent the portion with the best visibility and is the portion of masticatory mucous membrane wich covers the coronary extremity at alveolar bone, the important tissue in the oral cavity that has to be well known because the integrity of the profound periodontium depends on it’s health. Knowing the histological features of the gingival tissues helps us to understand the pathological changes that appear in the different evolutional stages of the periodontal disease. The purpose of this study was to highlight the histopathological changes in the periodontal tissue in chronic periodontitis. For the first group consisting of 40 patients of both sexes, which after the clinical exam were diagnosed with chronic marginal periodontitis, the biopsy pieces were harvested for every patient from a lateral dento-periodotal unit that received a gingivectomy indication. For the second group (witness) consisting of 20 patients of both sexes, that have presented different dental conditions with extraction indication, a biopsy was harvested, before the extraction, from the periodontal jacket (clinically healthy). The epithelium of the fibromucose fragments harvested from the patients clinically diagnosed with periodontal disease frequently has hyperplastic aspects, lots of times pseudopapilomatoses, a pronounced mitosis in the basal layer, that accompanies the inflammatory process, intraepithelial cellular vacuolations and akantoliza in the spinous layer. At the examinationon, the histological sections obtained from patients with chronic marginal periodontitis, in the majority of the cases we found consistent the clinical diagnosis and the histopathological aspect of the periodontal tissue. Knowing the histological changes of the periodontal tissue in chronic marginal periodontitis ensures a correct diagnosis and a favorable prognosis of the periodontal disease.
