THE ANATOMY OF CEREBRAL HEMISPHERES – ASPECTS FOR PSYCHIATRIC PRACTICE (Abstract): The aim of this paper is to review and draw attention upon some of the anatomical elements whose structural change has been proven to be involved in psychiatric pathology. For a long time research on psychiatric pathology has been oriented towards cellular chemistry and biology of neuronal processes. This fact has been favored by the discoveries regarding chemical mediators involved in transmitting inter neuronal information and substances which can influence these mediators or their receptors. Recent research directions have as starting point an old treatment method in psychiatric pathology, the electroconvulsive therapy. The first attempts in this field were linked to the appearance of the implanted electrodes for epilepsy. The development of this kind of aimed therapy triggered the emergence (or better yet reconsideration) of the ideas of psychiatric neurosurgery (the first interventions were frontal lobe lobotomy with more or less favorable outcomes). Instead of conclusion, we may state that the directions followed by the current research regarding the morphometry of the cerebral hemispheres are about to develop multiple therapies aimed at psychiatric chronic pathologies that for a long time have been considered incurable and caused the respective patients to be included in a certain degree of handicap.
