ANATOMICAL LANDMARKS USEFUL FOR THE MEASUREMENTS OF THE DIAMETERS OF THE INTERNAL ACOUSTIC MEATUS ON SECTIONAL IMAGING TECHNIQUES (Abstract): Introduction: The accurate measurement of the diameters of the skeletal structures is extremely important for a reliable reproduction of these measurements and precise results of the studies using such measurements. In order to be able to determine these accurate measurements, the researcher needs standardized anatomical landmarks which are widely accepted by the anatomists, anthropologists and forensic medical personnel. Objectives: The goal of this study is to specifically determine these landmarks on a very important part of the cranium, the petrosal part of the temporal bone. Material and method: We performed axial computer tomography examinations on 48 craniums of adult persons and we also used the axial computer tomography examinations of 37 patients of a private clinic in Bucharest. Discussion and conclusions: The exact determination of the landmarks used for measuring the main dimensions and angles of the important anatomical structures is the first vital step in establishing important forensic and anthropological information such as the sex or the race of the subject.
