HEART DIAMETERS BY AGE AND GENDER (Abstract): Data from the literature on the heart diameters vary widely, especially because of the way the measurements have been done. Morphological parameters changes of normal heart in relation to age and gender was the subject of research of many authors. In our study measurements were performed on 240 chest radiographs, divided by age and gender. Average longitudinal diameter is 133.5 mm and the average transverse diameter is 102.9 mm, both diameters are higher in men than in women. Longitudinal diameter is approximately 1.3 times greater than the transverse one. The two diameters are raised sharply in the first two decades of age, and in the next decades their growth is slow and progressive with age in both genders.
