HISTOPATHOLOGICAL PROCESSING OF 30 SURGICALLY EXCISED EYEBALLS FOR SUSPICION OF RETINOBLASTOMA (Abstract): The retinoblastoma or malignant neuro-epitheliome of retina is a primary, malignant intra ocular tumor that appears based on the immature nervous cells of the neuro sensorial foil of retina, in the course of developing this membrane. The retinoblastomas develop from the retina cells and have a direct extension potential from eye to brain or by hematogene extension, metastazing in other organs. In the absence of treatment, the prognosis is fatal. This fact underlines the peculiar value of a precocious correct diagnosis and the need of sensitizing the pediatricians to the evocative signs of retinoblastoma. The retinoblastomas are malignant tumors tending to metastasize to the brain and spinal cord and rarely to the lungs. A benign, rare variant was also reported of the retinoblastoma, called retinocytoma. The emergence of retinoblastoma in an eye and of retinocytoma in the other eye is characteristic to hereditary retinoblastoma.
