ORO-DENTAL MANIFESTATIONS IN CHILDREN WITH CHRONIC RENAL FAILURE (Abstract): Background: Children with CRF present important oro-dental changes. Insufficient enamel development and mineralization lead to dental hypoplasia. Objectives: To determine the saliva pH and the presence of oro-dental manifestations. Methods: 19 children (6 boys and 13 girls), 14 from rural and 5 from urban areas, age range: 6-17 years, all undergoing dialysis, were included in a prospective study. Results: Children with CRF have significantly less dental cavities than healthy children due to the inhibitory effects of high saliva urea concentrations. The saliva pH was more alkaline in children with renal failure compared to the control group. The severity of the oro-dental manifestations were correlated with the levels of CRP, with low levels of HDL cholesterol and high levels LDL cholesterol.
